AI consulting, Sydney

Your AI question is usually an operations question.

Lee Booy

Lee BooyFormer CTO, The Missing Link. Former COO and co-owner, The ID Crowd.

Practical AI for small businesses in Sydney that would rather see the hours come back than hear about the future of work. I start with the jobs eating your team's week, pick the simplest fix that works, and put a person's sign-off on anything that matters.

what it looks like

The unglamorous wins.

One job at a time, nothing clever for its own sake. Every one keeps a person checking the output.

The job

Expenses that file themselves

Receipts read, coded and filed into Xero, with the odd one flagged.

Human check: you approve anything it's unsure about.

The job

Proposals that don't start from blank

Drafted from your past wins, your pricing and your voice.

Human check: you edit and send. Nothing goes out on its own.

The job

Answers before anyone asks

A knowledge base that handles the questions your team asks you five times a week.

Human check: every answer cites its source, so anyone can check it.

The job

Research while you sleep

A morning brief on clients, tenders or competitors, waiting when you log on.

Human check: read by a person before anyone acts on it.

the first step

Bring the problem. We work through it together.

Start with one job: a 90-minute AI working session on a task from your team's week, $500 ex GST for up to 10 people. Which job, which tool, who checks the output. If there's more worth doing, you get a one-page plan and a price.

One-off

AI working session

$500 90 minutes, ex GST

  • One job from your week, worked through together
  • Up to 10 people can join, so bring whoever does the job
  • On site in Sydney or by video
  • You leave with a working helper for that job and a one-page cheat sheet

Monthly

Two sessions a month

$1,000 a month, ex GST

  • Two 90-minute sessions, one job at a time
  • Up to 10 people in each session
  • Month to month

When it's bigger than one job: the packs. For the whole team: team training.

how I approach it

Four rules I don't break.

01

Start with one job

The Tuesday task, the report nobody likes, the inbox that eats a morning. One at a time.

02

Simplest fix first

Process, then tools, then AI. Plenty of problems are solved at step one.

03

A person signs off

AI drafts, people approve. Every workflow has a named owner.

04

Measure it

Hours before and after, checked a month later. If it didn't pay, we switch it off.

Before antics · Deloitte, 2022-2024: a timesheet bot deployed to 15,000 people. The nudges and the comms did the work. AI adoption is a behaviour problem more than a tech one.

the honest numbers

What the numbers actually say.

The tool is rarely the problem. Set-up, time and habit are. That's why I treat AI as part of running the business.

~1 hour

a day saved on drafting and summarising in the Australian Government's 2024 Copilot trial. 60% of outputs still needed real edits.

Digital Transformation Agency, 2024.

2 in 3

workers get little or no guidance on what to do with the time AI saves them.

BCG, AI at Work, 2026.

straight answers

I'll tell you when it isn't worth it.

Sometimes the most useful thing I do is talk you out of a tool. Here's when I usually do.

  • The process is broken. AI just makes the mess faster.
  • The knowledge lives in one person's head.
  • A $20 app already does the job.
  • Nobody will own it once I step back.

questions

Questions, answered.

What about our data?

We set the rules before anyone uploads anything: what's fine to share, what isn't, and which settings to switch on. Client details and anything personal stay out of AI tools until those rules are in place.

We already pay for Copilot or ChatGPT. Now what?

Then we start there. Plenty of teams have the seats and not the habit: a couple of people fly, most don't. We pick one job from your week, set the tool up for it, and name who checks the output. If the whole team needs the habit, that's team training.

Will this replace anyone?

That's not the aim. The aim is hours back on the jobs nobody likes, and a plan for what your team does with that time. If a role is going to change, we talk about it openly before anything is built.

What does it cost to run?

Most tools cost a per-seat monthly fee. Automations usually cost little per task to run. I price it before we build, so you know the running cost as well as the build cost.

AI sessions or a monthly pack?

AI sessions: you bring one problem and we work it through together. A monthly pack: I bring the plan, the numbers and the follow-up across the business, AI included. Packs start at $1,000 a month, ex GST.

get started

Start with one job. Or a 30-minute chat first.

  1. 1Book a 30-minute chat. We pick the job and a time for the session.
  2. 2Bring the job, and whoever does it. Up to 10 people, $500 ex GST.
  3. 3If there's more worth doing, you get a one-page plan and a price.

Not sure you're the right size or stage? That's what the chat is for.

Someone needs to own this. The AI calls sit with whoever runs your tech and operations. If nobody has that job yet, that's what the monthly packs are for, from $1,000 a month, ex GST.
